Sometimes his middle name is given as Gabriel. He arrived on the "Patience"
September 9, 1751. Surname also spelled Conveare. He was naturalized in Philadelphia in
1765. He died intestate about 1785. He lived in Hatfield Township. I dont know his
relationship to the other Confers. It appears he came here relatively young as his
children are listed in the Indian Creek Records. That doesnt mean he wasnt
married in the Palatine and could even have brought a small child with him. Was he a son
of Henry? A nephew? No relation at all? Maybe he was Henrys brother. The following
is the information I found on him.
Montgomery County records begin in 1784. Hatfield Twp. records begin in 1787. There was
a reference to a Christian Convear of Hatfield Twp. will 9030. I checked this on
microfilm, but it was just an administration listing and it was not the same Christian
anyway. The Index of Wills & Administration Records of Philadelphia County 1682-1782
lists a Christian Conver, file 15, Admin. Book 1, pg. 17 for 1770. This does not appear to
be the same Christian.
I checked the Grantor-Grantee books in the Deed section. The name did not appear at all
under K (nor did it in the Will Books). The earliest reference was to a Peter Confer who
bought land in Franconia Twp. in 1793 and Peter Conver who sold land in Upper Salford in
1798.
The Montgomery Co. Abstract of Wills 1784-1824 had nothing.
At the Montgomery County Historical Society the lady was very helpful, but we
couldnt find any references to Henry or John Peter, only to Christian and his
descendants. She suggested they could have been in Bucks (as Hatfield Twp. is right next
to Bucks Co.) or went straight to Lehigh (Northampton County) although Henry didnt
take the deed to his land till five years later. But apparently, not taking deed till some
years after youd lived on the land was not uncommon.
From UPDATE 1976 HATFIELD HISTORY: The cowpath is the old road that divided Hatfield
Twp. evenly into north and south. The northern part of Hatfield was settled mostly be
Germans from the palatinate. These folks were mostly Mennonites. Also Reformed and
Lutheran came. Among the pioneers of this section were: Conver
.families.
The CONVER PLANTATION (Geo. Heckler farm, on the cowpath)
In 1770, Thomas and Richard Penn sold 53 acres to Christian Conver. In 1775 he bought
12 acres from Jacob Swartz; 1774, 2 acres of John Rosenberger. Christian died about 1805
(another record gives May 23, 1785) leaving children: Jacob, Peter, Catherine Leidy and
Margaret. Jacob, the eldest son, inherited the homestead where he lived for many years.
His will was made in 1827. In 1828 Abraham Clemmer bought the property of the heirs of
Jacob. His son-in-law, Jacob D. Gehman became owner in 1851. Acreage consisting of 87
acres. This farm during Christians time was adjacent to that of Lieut. Col. Jacob
Reed (Rev. War).
The following records are taken from the INDIAN CREEK REFORMED CHURCH (1753-1851)
Franconia Twp., Montgomery County. If he came in 1751 and Catherine was indeed his first
child, born about 6 years after he arrived, then it would seem he was relatively young
when he emigrated, married here and raised his whole family in Hatfield Twp. He never
moved out of that area, unlike the other Confers who seemed to move all over the place.
The children of Christian and Barbara Kunfer/Comfort are:
1757 |
May 29, Christian Comfort & wf. had a daughter bap.
CATHERINE; witnesses were Jacob Sorwer & wf. This Catherine was probably the one who
married Jacob Leydi (son of Carl Leydi) on April 8, 1777. They had a lot of children bap.
At Indian Creek. |
1760 |
JACOB, son of Christian Kunfer & wf. Barbara, born May
12; bapt. March 11, 1769; witness, the father. This Jacob is probably the Jacob Conwor who
married Elizabeth Riedt (both of Hatfield Twp.) on October 7, 1783 and whose numerous
children appear in the church records. He was prominent in Hatfield Twp.; inherited the
farm; was in Rev. War 4th class, 6th co., 5th battalion,
Phila. Co. |
1762 |
MARGARET, dau. of Christian Kunfer & wf. Barbara, b.
Oct.1, 1762; bapt. March 11, 1769. If Margaret remained in the area she may have been the
wife of John Schellenberg, Abe. Oberholzer, Christian Leilich, Geo. Scholl, etc. who all
had wives named Margaret. Or she may not have married at all. |
1764 |
JOHN PETER, son of Christian Kunfer & wf. Barbara, b.
April 17, 1764; bapt. March 11, 1769. There was a Peter Confort confirmed in 1779 and a
Peter Conver of Hatfield mar. Eliza. Brunner of Franconia Twp. on April 21, 1785. There
seems to be no further record. |
1766 |
VERONICA, dau. of Christian Kunfert & wf. Barbara born
march 7; bapt. March 11, 1769. Veronica may have been the wife of Jacob Leidy, Jr., or in
some way related to the Jacob Leidy married to her sister, Catherine. Also an Andrew
Gemmel had a wife named Veronica, but they only appear once as sponsors, whereas the other
couple appear as parents a lot. Note: a Jacob Leidy died of fever at 75 yrs. Less 5 days
on March 31, 1795. He left 8 children, 66 grandchildren (I must have copied this wrong!!)
and 8 great-grandchildren. |
1768 |
HENRY, son of Christian Kunfert and wf. Barbara, b. Jan. 22,
and bapt. March 11, 1769. There are records for a Henry Kunzer, if indeed it is the same
person. |
1770 |
CHRISTIAN, b. Nov. 19, 1770; bapt. Sept. 20, 1773. Parents
were Christian Codor and wf. Barbara. Witnesses were the parents. |
1773 |
ABRAHAM, born Feb. 15; bapt. Sept. 20, 1773. Parents &
witnesses were Christian Codor & wf. Barbara. |
After these 16 years we have no further record of Christian & Barbara. It is now
Jacob & his wife, Elizabeth, who leave a long record. But note Christian named one of
his sons John Peter and one Henry and his first daughter is Catherine. Jacob is also a
common name in the Cunfer family.
1784 |
ELIZABETH, b. Jan. 15; bapt. Feb. 5 to Jacob Comfort &
wf. Sponsors Conrad Leydi & wf. |
1784 |
ELIZABETH, b. Jan. 3, 1784; bapt. April 25; sponsors Conrad
Schaub & wf. Parents Jacob Comfort & wf. |
Note: The above is somewhat confusing, esp. since they had another Elizabeth in 1792.
Either one year is wrong, or they are sponsors, not parents in one instance.
1783 |
MAGDALENA, b. Sept. 31; bapt. Nov. 4. Parents are Jacob
Conover & wf. Elizabeth. Sponsors Jacob Ried & wf. Maybe this year should be 1785,
as a Magdalena Comfort, aged 16, (dau. of Jacob) was confirmed in 1801. This may have been
the same Magdalena Confort who married Jacob Scnabel on March 24, 1807. |
1786 |
JOHN, b. Sept. 18; bapt. Dec. 2. Parents were Jacob Conver
& wf. Elizabeth. Sponsor John Ried. This was probably the John Comfor confirmed at 14
in 1801. However, in 1805, there is also listed a John Comfort as being confirmed, also
the son of Jacob. There is a record for the burial of a John Comfort on Feb. 24, 1809. On
1/14/1806 John Comfort & Magdalena Furman were wit. For Maria, the child of Adam Durn
& wf. Margaret. |
1788 |
CATHERINE - b. May 4; bapt. June 19. Parents Jacob Convoer
& wf. Elizabeth. Catherine Ried, single, was sponsor. This was probably the Catherine
Comfort who married Jonathan Zane on Sept. 15, 1811. No further reference. |
1789 |
CHRISTIAN, b. July 11; bapt. Aug. 16. Parents Jacob Conver
& Elizabeth. Christian Leilich & wf. Margaret were sponsors. Christian Comfort was
confirmed in 1805. On Sept. 5, 1813 Christian Comfort & Maria Schnabel were married.
They had a child Elizabeth in 1815. There is a burial record for Christian Comfort on May
18, 1815, aged 25 yrs., 10 mos., 6 das. |
1792 |
ELIZABETG, b. Feb. 27; bapt. April 29. Parents Jacob Comfor
& wf. Elizabeth, Sponsors Henry Scheib & wf. An Elizabeth Comfort, aged 18 (dau.
of Jacob) was confirmed in 1809. |
1794 |
SARAH (?). There was a Sarah aged 15 (dau. of Jacob)
confirmed in 1809. |
1796 |
JACOB, b. Dec. 14, 1795; bapt. June 5. Parents Jacob Comfort
& wf. Elizabeth. Sponsor Jacob Reid. Possibly this child died as there is no further
record. |
1797 |
GEORGE, b. Dec.8. Parents Jacob Convert & Elizabeth.
Sponsors George Leydi & wf. In 1815 a George Comfort, aged 18, (son of Jacob) was
confirmed. |
1799 |
ANNA, b. Sept. 7, 1799. Parents Jacob Convor & Elizabeth
Sponsors John Henge & Eliza. Reed. No further record. |
1800 |
On Oct. 16 & 18 two children of Jacob Comfort were buried
by Rev. Jacob Senn (1799-1817 Reformed). Possibly these were Jacob & Anna. |
1802 |
MARIA, b. Jan. 19; bapt. May 10. Parents Jacob Comfor &
wf. Elizabeth. sponsors Henry Seipel & wf. Eliza. A Maria Comfort along with Samuel
Keller are listed as sponsors for a child Maria born June 23, 1821. Parents were Sam &
Maria Reith. |
1803 |
MARGARET, b. Nov. 28; bapt. June 1, 1804. Parents Jacob
Comfort & wf. Eliza. Sponsors were Andrew Reed & Margaret Leydi. No further
record. |
1808 |
SAMUEL, b. Sept. 26. Parents and sponsors were Jacob Comfort
& wf. Eliza. No further record. |
After these approx. 12 children, Jacob & Elizabeth appear in the church records
mainly as sponsors.
1786 |
Jacob Conver & wf. Eliza. were sponsors of a George, born
Oct. 7; bapt. Dec. 2, child of Jacob Leidi & wf. Catherine. Probably the sister and
brother-in-law of Jacob. |
1805 |
Jacob Comfor & wf. Eliza. are sponsors for Eliza., b.
Feb. 10, child of Abe Sheib & wf. Maria. |
1808 |
Jacob Comfort & wf. Eliza. are sp. for Eliza., b. Oct. 29
child of Jacob Snabel & wf. Magdalena. Note: on March 24, 1807, Jacob Schnabel &
Magdalena Comfort were married. |
1812 |
Jacob Confort & wf. Eliza. were sp. for Eliza., b. July
26, child of Jonathan Zane & wf. Catherine. Note: Sept. 15, 1811, Jonathan Zane &
Catharina Comfort were married. |
1814 |
Jacob Comfort & wf. Eliza. were sponsors for Eliza. b.
June 11, child of Christian Comfort & wf. Maria (bapt. July 31). Christian & Maria
were married Sept. 5, 1813. |
1820 |
Jacob Conver & Eliza. were sp. for William b. March 14,
to Henry & Sarah Brunner. Perhaps this was Sarah Comfort. |
