E.B. Gifford Dies Suddenly

An event which was a great shock to this community happened Monday shortly after noon when Ernest B. Gifford, one of our most highly respected citizens died suddenly from an attack of apoplexy at his home about four miles east of town.

Mr. Gifford, who was seventy-six years old, had been complaining of not feeling well for some time. On Monday he had just sat down at the table for the noon meal when he gave a low cry and fell from his chair. Mrs. Gifford telephoned for help and the neighbors and physician arrived quickly but found that death had preceded them. The shock to Mrs. Gifford has been very great since she has been in poor health for several years.

The coroner, Elmer Hafnagel, of Mt. Sterling was called and after investigation waived an inquest.

Mr. Gifford is survived by his wife, Alice Lewis Gifford, two daughters, Mrs. Clayton Hyatt, of Meredosis, who came Monday afternoon and Mrs. Bell Madden of Deer Park, Washington, and a son Frank Gifford of St. Louis. He also leaves four sisters, Mrs. John Orr of Mt. Sterling, Mrs. Ida Tolle of Tampa, TX, Mrs. Margaret Grady of Rockport, and Mrs. Charles Orr of this place; also a brother, Joseph Gifford of Newark, Nebraska.
