Alice Lewis, daughter of John R and Martha Lewis was born December 18, 1859 in Woodstock Township near Rushville, IL and departed this life on October 4th, 1947, at Malcolm Bliss Hospital in St. Louis, MO aged 87 years, nine months, and 16 days.

She was united in marriage to Ernest B. Gifford, April 20, 1880 at Fort Scott, Kansas. To this union were born four children: two sons and two daughters, one son passed away at the age of three years and one daughter, Mrs. Clayton Hyatt of Meredosia, passed away six years ago.

Her surviving children are Mrs. Frank Madden of Deer Park, Wash., and Frank A. Gifford of St. Louis. Mr. Gifford passed away March 13, 1933.

Mrs. Gifford united with the Methodist church in Versailles, sixty years ago under the pastorate of the Rev. W. M. McElfresh. She was devoted to the work of the church and loyal to all of its services as long as her health permitted. She was always kind and sympathetic, a loving and devoted mother and companion. She spent the greater part of her life in Brown county, giving up her home in Versailles only two years ago to live with her son and his wife in St. Louis, where she was tenderly cared for until her summons to her home in Heaven.

Memories of her long and useful life and beautiful Christian character will be cherished by a multitude of friends and acquaintances.
