John Gifford was born in Clarion County, Pa., May 27, 1839, and died of cancer of the stomach, at his home near Border Chapel, on Thursday, Sept. 29, 1904, aged 65 years, 4 months, and 2 days. In the year 1857, he with his parents removed to Ill., where he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Lear. In 1886, he came with his family to this state, settling on a farm south of Wilcox, and near which place he has lived up to the time of his death. Thirteen children have been born to this union, seven of whom with their mother, are left to mourn his loss. They are Mrs. J. Dunbar, J. M. Gifford, J. A. Gifford, Mrs. S. S. Brouhard, of this city, Mrs. H. Watterman, of Holdrege, and George and Charles who reside at home.

Funeral services were held from Border Chapel Saturday at 12 o'clock, Rev. J. W. Taylor of this city in charge, who delivered a very able and comforting sermon, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Freewater Cemetery.

"Uncle John," as he was familiarly known, was always considered one of the very best citizens of Freewater community. He was highly respected wherever known, and his death has cast a gloom over the entire community. The sorrowing family has the sympathy of all in their bereavement.
