James McMath was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania about the year 1759. He was a soldier in the American Revolution in the Chester County, Pennsylvania militia.

James married Hannah Kellar and lived in Washington County, PA before moving in 1817 to Harrison County, OH where he died in 1838.  James had 7 children, namely William L., Mary Lilly, John, Harland, David, James, Jr., and Simeon.  William L. McMath married Mary McGee and lived near Cincinnatti, OH.  I have no further information on Mary McMath.  John McMath married Elizabeth Rooney,  Harland married Julia Mitchell,  David married Charity Mowders, James married Ellen Lawrence and Simeon married Hannah Adams.

It is listed in the Ancient Family of McMath by Frank McMath that the father of James was Donald McMath.  According to Daniel Cary McMath, a great-grandson of James, in correspondence with my great-aunt, this is incorrect and Donald's name should be Daniel.  Checking the records should prove this theory as there are no known Donald McMath's in the United States in the mid-1700's who could be James' father.  According to Daniel Cary McMath, James McMath was most likely a brother of my ancestor Samuel McMath though no direct proof has been found.  According to Daniel Cary, James McMath returned to Pennsylvania in 1819 after moving to Ohio  to visit relatives.  It was not said who the relatives were but the only McMath he could find records of in Pennsylvania was Samuel.
