Bernice M. McMath, 92, formerly of Shade Valley, and more recently of Latrobe, PA, died at 1:40 p.m. Friday, April 2, 2004, at Latrobe Area Hospital Latrobe. Death was unexpected.

Mass of Christian Burial was held April 6 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, RD Shade Gap, with Rev. Fr. George Koharchik officiating. Interment was made at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, RD Shade Gap.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia.

Born Jan. 22, 1912, in Derry, Westmoreland County, she was a daughter of the late Francis and Clara (Hagie) Werner.

She was married to Bernard S. McMath on April 18, 1938, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Derry, PA. Mr. McMath preceded her in death May 26, 1986.

She is survived by four sisters and one brother: Clara McMath of Shade Valley, Jane Oeschger of Derry, Elizabeth Smeltzer of Pitcairn, Mary Janet Werner of Pittsburgh, and Robert Werner of Derry.

She was preceded in death by three brothers: Joseph, William and James; and two sisters, Rita Werner and Camillus McMath.

Mrs. McMath was a very active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, RD Shade Gap, where she had taught Sunday School classes and was a member of the Ladies Guild.
She also belonged to Huntingdon County Farm Women, the Tuscarora Grange and the Shade Gap Golden Agers.

Mrs. McMath moved to Latrobe where she lived with Roland and Mary Caroline Weimer (her niece) where she enjoyed life to the fullest attending church services faithfully, going shopping and out to at with family. Later she got her own apartment at Barnes House Assisted Living Concepts' where she lived until the Lord called her home.
