John Chalmers MCMATH, of Clearfield, Iowa, son of the late William SIMPSON and Elizabeth (WATERS) MCMATH, of Shade Valley, Huntingdon county, passed away at his Iowa home in Jan. He was born at Williamsburg, Iowa, on Aug. 5, 1857.

When John was but a year old his parents purchased a farm in Shade Valley where they resided for many years. John was the oldest of seven children. William MCMATH, the youngest son, resides of the old homestead in Shade Valley.

In 1875 John returned to Iowa leaving many friends behind which he had made by his kindly and humorous disposition. When he returned to Shade Valley with his sister for a two months visit eight years ago, after an absence of thirty-seven years, many of his old friends visited him and made his last visit to his Huntingdon county home a pleasant one.

On March 24, 1880 he was united in marriage to Margaret Jane MARSHALL, of Morning Sun, Iowa. Eleven children were born to this union: William C. MCMATH and Nellie MCMATH died in infancy. Vinson W. MCMATH, of Creston, Iowa, Elvin C. MCMATH, of Columbus Junction, Iowa, Leland C. MCMATH, J. Orleaf MCMATH, Elwood M. MCMATH, Earl A. MCMATH, Kathryn B. MCMATH, and Mrs. Frances TAYLOR, of Clearfield, Iowa, and Mrs. Jane HOUSEAL, of Columbus Junction, Iowa.

Besides his children he is survived by twenty-two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one brother, William L. MCMATH, of Shade Valley Huntingdon county, and one sister, Mrs. Margaret J. MCVEY, of Columbus City, Oregon.

Interment was made at the Clearfield cemetery beside his wife who departed this life on May 3, 1928.
